The Black Nurses Association of Nunavut (BNAN) is a non-profit organization founded with a deep commitment to creating a supportive and empowering network for Black nurses and nursing students in Nunavut. We are proud members of the Pan-Canadian Association for Nurses of African Descent (PCANAD), a national organization that serves as a collective voice for Canadian nurses of African descent and advances advocacy, leadership, and equity across the country. Through this national affiliation, BNAN contributes to and benefits from broader advocacy efforts, shared knowledge, and collective action at the national level.
We are dedicated to advocating for our members, uplifting their voices, and providing opportunities for growth and leadership. Our mission is to advance health equity, promote cultural safety, and foster professional excellence within the healthcare system. Through meaningful collaboration, impactful mentorship, and community-driven care, we strive to break barriers, celebrate diversity, and inspire the next generation of Black healthcare leaders across the territory and beyond.
We believe that representation matters and that culturally responsive care is essential to improving health outcomes in our communities. By offering mentorship programs, professional development workshops, and advocacy initiatives, BNAN empowers its members to lead with confidence and compassion. Our Mission
At the Black Nurses Association Of Nunavut (BNAN), our mission is to uplift and empower Black nurses and nursing students across Nunavut by providing strong advocacy, meaningful mentorship, opportunities for professional development, and deep-rooted community engagement. We are committed to creating a supportive environment where Black nurses feel seen, heard, and celebrated. Through advocacy efforts, we work to dismantle systemic barriers, promote equity, and ensure that Black voices are amplified within the healthcare system. Our mentorship programs connect experienced nurses with students and early-career professionals to foster growth, confidence, and leadership skills. We believe that investing in professional development is key to building a resilient and talented nursing community, and we offer resources, training, and opportunities that help our members thrive in their careers. Beyond the individual, we are deeply invested in building a sense of belonging and unity through community engagement initiatives that strengthen bonds, celebrate culture, and inspire collective progress. The vision of the Black Nurses Association Of Nunavut (BNAN) is to be a driving force for transformative change within Nunavut’s healthcare landscape. We aspire to foster strong Black nursing leadership that not only thrives but also paves the way for future generations to succeed and inspire. By nurturing and supporting leaders who reflect the diversity of the communities they serve, we aim to ensure that healthcare in Nunavut becomes more inclusive, responsive, and just. Our vision includes improving access to culturally competent care, where patients’ unique histories, identities, lived experiences, and traditions are respected and integrated into everyday healthcare practices. We believe that culturally safe care is fundamental to building trust, improving outcomes, and fostering healthier, more resilient communities. Beyond healthcare itself, we are committed to championing broader social change—advocating for systemic reforms, promoting anti-racism within institutions, and empowering nurses to be agents of equity both inside and outside the clinical environment.
